Frequently asked questions
Is it really free? What's the catch?
The core Scribara — editor, story map, glossary, notes, AI connections, backups, export — is free with no limits. We earn on professional modules (translator, EPUB and others), each bought once and owned forever. No subscriptions, no trials, no "word limits".
What do I need for the AI features?
Your own API key from Claude (Anthropic), OpenAI or Google Gemini — you pay the provider directly for what you use, usually cents. Or install Ollama and run a local model completely free and offline (needs a beefier PC).
Where are my manuscripts stored?
In Documents/Scribara on your computer — as plain files you can open, copy or put in your own cloud. The app sends nothing anywhere. Plus automatic single-file .scrib backups.
How do I buy a module? And another one later?
After purchase you get a key that you enter on the module's card inside the app. Each module has its own key, so you can start with one and add others anytime. Activation works offline.
How do updates work?
The app notifies you when a new version is out. Download the new installer and run it on top — all projects, settings and licenses are preserved.
Will there be macOS / Linux / mobile?
Yes — first a stable Windows release, then macOS and Linux. A mobile app with sync is a separate big milestone on the roadmap.
